Excitement is growing for “God of War.”
Amazon‘s upcoming live-action series, based on the best-selling PlayStation video game of the same name by developer Sony Santa Monica, was announced back in 2022.
Since then, information about the project hasn’t exactly been abundant. But now, as it nears its predicted 2027 release, we’re finally being allowed to know more.

We do know the first showrunner for “God of War,” Rafe Judkins (“The Wheel of Time”) left the production in late 2024. Ronald D. Moore (“For All Mankind”) replaced him shortly after, suggesting one or two creative differences behind the scenes.
With Kratos now announced and the rest of the cast slowly being named, the pace of production seems to be quickening.
What is ‘God of War’?
“God of War” is a series of action games for PlayStation. The first game was released for the PlayStation 2 in 2005.
In it, players control of Kratos, a Spartan warrior who seeks revenge on the Greek Gods after Ares tricks him into killing his own family.
The latest release is “God of War: Ragnarök,” released for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 in 2022.
What is the Story in the ‘God of War’ TV Series?
The “God of War” TV series will adapt both the 2018 video game and its 2022 sequel, Amazon confirms.
A January 14th press release states, “In God of War, the live-action series, his story will closely follow the path of the last two games as he deals with something new: his ten-year-old son Atreus. This father and son dynamic began a whole new chapter in the legendary series and will be the heartbeat of the new show.”
The 2018 video game is set 150 years after God of War III, in the world of Norse mythology. It sees an older, wiser Kratos embark on a journey with his son Atreus to spread the ashes of his wife.
