Greece’s Civil Protection Authority has issued a red code alert for large parts of northern and central Greece, Thessaly, the Peloponnese and parts of the Aegean ahead of severe weather expected Sunday.
Authorities warned of heavy rain, thunderstorms, hail, strong winds and snow in mountainous and lowland areas, with the greatest risk in regions of Larissa, Magnesia, Pieria, Imathia and Halkidiki.
Civil Protection Secretary Nikos Papeystathiou convened the Risk Assessment Committee with Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Minister Giannis Kefalogiannis to coordinate preparedness.
Local authorities have been instructed to activate emergency response units, while residents in landslide-prone areas are urged to avoid travel.
Meteorologists classify the storm as “very significant” and expect conditions to gradually ease Monday.
