Greek-American Partners of ‘New York Wholesale Bagels’ to Meet… In Court

NEW YORK – A scene of complete rupture, now leading to a court battle, is revealed in a report by the New York Post concerning the historic company ‘New Yorker Wholesale Bagels’, founded by George Menegatos and Nicholas Evangelinos, with a long tradition dating back to 1981.

This time, the conflict involves the younger generation. Spyros and Steven Menegatos, sons of George Menegatos – who passed away prematurely in March 2021 due to complications from COVID-19 – filed a $25 million lawsuit in federal court in Brooklyn, accusing Stefanos Evangelinos, son of the other founder, of excluding them from the business and depriving them of the share to which they were entitled.

According to the complaint, Stefanos Evangelinos was the 50/50 partner of George and the key person for all corporate information, and George Menegatos had explicitly asked his family to treat him like an ‘older brother’.

The children of the late Georgios Menegatos (third from the left) believe they were deceived by the son of the other company founder and have taken legal action. TNH/File

The lawsuit also refers to deep family and spiritual ties between the two families. Spyros Menegatos is the godfather of Stefanos Evangelinos’s daughter.
