Art Lovers Can Join a Getty Villa Lecture on Jewish and Greek Cultures and an Online Drawing Class
Two free educational events hosted by the Getty on Monday, January 12, 2026, will explore art, history, and culture through both scholarly discussion and hands-on practice, with options to attend in person or online.
The evening program will take place at 6:00 p.m. Pacific time at the Getty Villa and online worldwide. Katherine E. Fleming, president and chief executive officer of the J. Paul Getty Trust, will open the 2026 Thalia Potamianos Lecture Series with a talk titled “Bakeries and Synagogues: The Shared Greek and Jewish Space of the Late Imperial Mediterranean.”
The lecture series, organized by the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, examines the lasting influence of Greek thought and culture. The 2026 program focuses specifically on the historical and cultural intersections between Greek and Jewish communities. Fleming’s lecture will explore how everyday spaces, including bakeries and synagogues, functioned as shared sites of interaction in the late imperial Mediterranean world. You can learn more about the lecture series here.

Earlier in the day, the Getty will host a live online drawing workshop in collaboration with London’s Royal Drawing School. The class will run from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Pacific time and is offered in connection with the Getty exhibition “Learning to Draw.”
The workshop will feature tutor-led instruction, commentary from the exhibition’s curator, and a live model. Participants will examine how drawing informed the practice of artists working between 1550 and 1850, using works from the Getty Museum’s collection as reference points. The session is designed for both experienced artists and beginners.
To participate, attendees will need a computer or tablet equipped with a webcam and speakers, along with drawing materials and space to work comfortably.
Both events are free and open to the public. The lecture will be accessible to audiences attending at the Getty Villa as well as those joining remotely, while the drawing workshop will be conducted entirely online.
