Greek cuisine ranks second worldwide

Greek cuisine ranks second globally in the new TasteAtlas ranking of the 100 best cuisines in the world, according to the World Food Awards 2025/26. Greece is only behind Italy, leaving behind countries with a strong international culinary presence, such as Spain, France, and Japan.

The ranking is based on user and expert reviews and captures the overall gastronomic identity of each country, beyond individual dishes or current trends. In the case of Greece, the high ranking is associated with the long-standing presence of traditional recipes, the emphasis on raw materials, and the simplicity of everyday cooking.

At the same time, Greek cuisine is consistently present on the list of the best dishes internationally. Dishes such as kontosouvli, paidiaki, and yuvecti are among the standout options, alongside established international products such as Neapolitan pizza, Japanese ramen, and American barbecue.

According to TasteAtlas, the appeal of Greek cuisine does not come from modern or experimental versions, but from the stability of the flavors and their connection to everyday life. Most of the dishes that are distinguished remain unchanged for decades and are consumed both in Greece and abroad, without significant variations in their basic form.

The ranking takes place during a period when international culinary trends often focus on impressing, fusion cuisine, and haute cuisine techniques. In this environment, Greek cuisine is positively valued for the purity of its flavors, the use of olive oil, roasted meats, legumes, and stews, elements that remain central to its Mediterranean dietary character.

This new distinction adds to Greece’s overall international image as a destination with a strong gastronomic footprint, in a market where local cuisine is a key factor in the travel experience.
