A 2-year-old Albanian child lost his life yesterday, December 6, in Zakynthos, Greece, after being attacked by a pitbull dog in his home.
Regarding the incident, there is no information to suggest that the animal had previously shown aggressive behavior. Currently, the pit bull has been placed in a shelter by order of the prosecutor, in accordance with the law.
“From tomorrow, it will be sent to a veterinarian for monitoring,” Zakynthos mayor George Stasinopoulos said in an interview with ERT. Over the next week, a five-member committee from Patras will decide whether the animal should be euthanized or kept in a shelter for protection.
“No one yet knows how this happened and how the child died,” the mayor of Zakynthos added.
The parents of the 2-year-old boy, the Albanian father and British mother, were released unconditionally, by order of the prosecutor, after it was reported that the child was alone at home, together with the pitbull, when the animal began to bite him violently, mainly on the body and throat.
The incident took place in the family’s home in the village of Agios Leon on Zakynthos. At the time of the attack, the father tried in every way to save the child from the animal’s mouth, but was unsuccessful.
“My little girl called me and I ran right away, that’s all I remember. My son ran away,” the little boy’s father told Alpha television in shock. “The dog was homeless, they had thrown it away and I took it in because the village said it would eat animals. I took it in to give it a place to stay, and it took my son away. The boy saw me, smiled at me and closed his eyes,” the little boy’s father added.
Despite the great efforts of the doctors in the emergency room, the child arrived at the hospital in very serious condition and, unfortunately, could not survive the severe injuries.
“We have never seen such a sight,” said the nurses and doctors who dealt with the case.
According to Greek media reports, the boy’s parents were very animal-loving and often collected stray animals in the area and cared for them. The pitbull was adopted a few weeks ago, having previously lived as a stray dog ??in the village.
