Eleni Foureira, one of Greece’s most prominent pop artists, has spoken in detail about her connection to the Eurovision Song Contest and her thoughts on a possible future appearance for Greece. The comments were made during an interview on ALPHA TV’s programme Kalýtera De Gínetai.
Foureira, who represented Cyprus in 2018 and finished second with the song Fuego, described Eurovision as a demanding and highly pressured competition. She noted that the contest is unlike a typical live performance because “in three minutes you have to show who you are and what you do”. She added that the experience inevitably involves anxiety and competition, and recalled that her own participation came with what she described as “ignorance of the risks”, particularly since the staging was designed without a large budget.
Asked whether she would consider representing Greece, Foureira responded clearly. “I would do it,” she said. However, she also questioned whether she currently has the right artistic material for such an attempt. “I do not know if I have anything more to show,” she explained, although she acknowledged that a song “completely different from Fuego” could change that assessment. She described Greece as central to her identity. “I love Greece. It is my life, my homeland. I grew up in Greece and I always wanted to represent my country,” she said.
Foureira also reflected on her recent release Alleluia. Although she believes the song contains elements suited to Eurovision, she said it would not be the right choice for her, as it does not highlight the aspect of performance where she feels strongest. “I like to express myself physically. I want something more dynamic, something sexier, something that feels more like me,” she said.
A substantial part of the interview focused on the creative approach behind Fuego. The track had already been completed before she was approached to perform it, and at first she was unsure whether it suited her. Her collaboration with Swedish choreographer and creative director Sacha Jean-Baptiste was decisive. Foureira recalled insisting that the staging should reflect her authentic style. When Jean-Baptiste suggested that the concept was “too sexy”, Foureira replied, “I am too sexy”. The choreography was eventually built around her movement and performance preferences, an approach she believes contributed significantly to the success of the final result.
Foureira concluded that Eurovision remains a highly challenging platform where success depends on preparation, the right song choice and a clear artistic identity. Although she expressed reservations about returning, she left open the possibility of a future participation with Greece, if she finds a song that allows her “to do what I know how to do well”.
