🗣 “There’s too many players playing for Ireland who are too used to losing games.
🗣 “If it’s a case of bringing in some of the U21s…
🗣 “But there’s too many lads over the last 2, 3, 4 years who have consistently lost for Ireland.

As a Greek I have to say I've always been a fan of the Irish national team. It began when I first saw Ireland defeat England in the 88 Euros as a kid. Always liked their work ethic and grit.
Truth is Greece have made gradual steps in the last few years "under the radar" of the international community. Poyet as coach set some serious foundations the last few years and the hiccup where we failed to beat Georgia away and qualify for the Euros may well have been a blessing in disguise. And now we have a new coach who understands Greek players that are now ready to find success with the national team.
But Ireland should be better than this, with all respect. That hunger and grit just isn't there and it's almost unnatural to see an Irish side without it. I've just grown up watching Houghton and Aldridge and later Duff and Keane (both Robbie and Roy) wear that Irish shirt with a do or die attitude.
I hope to see Ireland bounce back that's all. Was always a great team to watch and us Greeks love the Irish people anyway. So there's that.
Can't see us winning a single game in this group. We would struggle in a four-island tournament with Valentia Island, Achill Island and the Aran Islands.
Roy Keane in as the manager
When you havnt got the players dosent matter who you have over you. Even if the debt the FAI had was paid off still wouldnt make a difference. Ireland are gone so far back its not even embarasing anymore.. say it as it is
We have had less time on the ball than Whelan had for Irish supporters after autographs back in the day
this is the sort of situation Whelan would have stopped and Dunphy and the irish press would ask what does he do?. one of the problems is that the irish media don't understand soccer. Mick McCarthy left out Matt Doherty because his style did not fit with a limited Irish team and the press gave Mick such stick. then the press forced the appointment of a pub team manager who was going to turn these players into spain. this was madness but the press gave him 100 percent support, i blame the press.
Glenn Whelan. Horrendous fuckin player.
If you've players applying their trade at mid to lower table PL, or worse Championship level then this is what you'll get, and see. 2 CL players in that squad, Kelleher and Idah, that's it, plus players who really should step aside now, Coleman, Robbie (1 goal wonder) Brady, it's also having a good football brain and I don't see any of those players having it, it's not harsh but the reality, we can't make a limited bunch suddenly look like prime Pirlo or Iniesta.
Ireland will not qualify for a major tournanent for the next 3 to 4 qualifying, if they expand both Euros and WC to accomodate European teams then you'd say Slovenia, Slovakia, Georgia, Nth Macedonia are further on than us getting there. I grew up with the Charlton era, at times the football wasn't great but we were competetive (esp at home) I don't see any of that fight in this group, zero passion and to some who are lucky to even have an Int jersey on their back…seriously.
Glen, you don't have the players though. How can you expect a filet mignon when you only have spam in the cupboard?
We are the only country in Europe where there is no professional league. It's a joke that people in this country dont support an Irish league. Yes people in other countries watch the premier league, but they all support local teams in their own country. If more people followed the league of ireland there would be more money in the game which produces better facilities, pitches, better players which would improve the quality. Its embarrassing how people say "we" this and "we" that when they talk.about united or Liverpool or whoever. Same people who llose the rag if someone claims an Irish person as english
Don't panic, the temptation to recruit from africa, Asia and so on is not good for the game here, keep with Irish lads, we will get there.
The Greek team is going through a Renaissance with many young players who will be stars in Europe over the next 10 years. Koulierakis, Tzolis, Ioannidis, Konstantelias, Zafeiris.. plus already established players like Tsimikas, Mavropanos, Vlachodimos Pavlidis.. Ireland just doesnt have the talent to match Greece at the moment. Greece was struggling for talent 5 years ago, not anymore… Unfortunately people from the UK and Ireland underestimate countries like Greece because their surnames are too hard to pronounce and remember
Glenn Whelan is spot on; as a die-hard Ireland fan it hurts me to admit that at the moment we seem to have a “losing mentality.” When the manager says that his players are “lacking confidence” in public and the team captain says his team are “tired of losing” then something is amiss in the mental preparation area. That is not easily changed, but for what it’s worth, I’ll ask this question: is the FAI utilizing High Performance / Mental Preparation Training? I know that it has worked for Athletics Ireland and it is considered “the norm” in a lot of professional sports…Just a thought.
Either ways we need to give Heimer the support to turn things around – as he will. There are NO magic fixes to this, and it will probably happen one thing as a time…But real Ireland fans have no choice but to give him that time…To those you who don’t want to wait, and take a cynical approach, then don’t bother watching; no one is forcing you.
Speaking in riddles mr whelan, "something has got to change", well off course something has got to change. Its a sinking ship, moving the seats around wont help. Decades of neglect and brutal investment has resulted in what were seeing. Greece have clubs alone, any one of which would dwarf the entire league of ireland in any matric you wish to look at but some how were expected to beat them, arrogance. England would beat us with their best of championship team. Any premiership team would buy the league of ireland over countless times. Were shit because we havent nutured and developed football full stop in this country. Any success has in the main being in spite of the barriers and down to dedicated individuals who believe in irish football and its supporters. The domestic league has the capacity to develope nothing. The infrastructure is embrassingly bad in a country the sells itself out to multinationals to give it a unsustainable economy but builds f… all and when it does built something its the most expensive in the world. Oh ya and we all kind of allow this cause were great craic
. This is a huge wake up call but im not hearing anyone calling it out. Somethings got to change, what the f… does that mean. A tame punditry quote afraid to call out whats wrong. Its not the new managers fault. He looks as bewildered as anyone. I feel for alot of the irish players, i can see there trying but within a f… up system and structure that is the FAI. Young people have engaged with the league of ireland createing bigger crowds and better atmosphere and still no real investment. We need a plan, the resourses to carry it out and humility to accept where we are and how we got here.
The only change that will work is better players I'm afraid. Some are good, but too many of them just don't meet the bar.
Where has all the new talent S Kenny used to refer to …and all the passes he might mention …and needing time to encourage young players? Was it all a ball of smoke and was Liam Brady right about the quality of the players ?
Could never see Whelan doing much when he played for Ireland. Dunphy reckoned he was useless.
Most of the players in the squad now wont get much better, its a horrible team bar a few, the worst Ireland team ever and things will only get worse from here, i say that based on what i see in parks around dublin every weekend from various age groups, they are thought nothing about the game, no technical abilities worked on, coaches afraid to let 7yos lose a game, they need to express themselves on the ball at a young age, what im seeing some weeks is 20 kids in the middle of the pitch chasing each other like headless chickens. FAI is a joke, facilities across the country are shocking with a few exceptions, gangsters lining their own pockets. I remember primary school in the 90s all we done was play ball in the yard, plus other days we would have coaches come in setting up great games and given advice on improving skills, then in the summer we had great football tournaments in coolock organised for all kids of different ages, most summer days we probably played ball 7 hours or more, so many kids i knew where unbelievably talented but unfortunately went down very dark roads in their teens, honest to god those lads back then that threw it away would eat this ireland team alive. Time to organise football camps accros the country and get kids up and moving again, and teaching them nutrition and life skills along the way, like martial arts does.
Grass roots in Ireland 🇮🇪 is terrible 👎
Glen was great at chewing gum but little else …was stupidly blown up by his friends on the panel when he played .
The Greeks play One Touch football with confidence. They look like they are enjoying them themselves. We just can't play like that sadly and our defending is amateurish. A real lack of determination to stop goals going in at all costs
Something needs to change glenn well why dont ya try give an answer to it . Whats needs changing ??
Whelan was one of the problems 😅 . He was over picked when he was playing for such an average player the mind boggles its the same now with most of these players . Obviously we are lacking talent we cant even get the bssics right like keeping the ball not panicking sighs 😢 . These are supposedly professional players they cant string some passes together n upfront for fucks sake they cant hit a fucking barn door jeez we are screwed it was bad before but this just takes the biscuit what a shambles
Ogbene,Kelleher and Ferguson and thats it ,the rest are not at this level to be nice.
IRELAND ARE A CRAP SOCCER TEAM EVEN A GREEK SECONDS TEAM WOULD BEAT THEM I FEEL FOR THE IRISH EANS
IRELAND NO TICKER WHEN YOU COME TO ATHENS GREECE WILL WIN 3=0
wHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU SHOULD NOT BE LOSING TO THE LIKES OF GREECE GREECE WILL ALWAYS BEAT ISLAND THERE MORE GIFTED ATHLETES STICK TO GAELIC FOOTBALL IRELAND HAHAHAHA
We have crap players .simple as
They are a bunch Wasters
Very sad how bad Irish football has gone the FAI are a joke
Good servant to ireland, not his fault he was picked. Blame managers, blame the fai, dont blame the players, except Kevin kilbane. Still blame him for missing the rebound off the peno in 2002.
We don't really have a left back or a right back , midfield isn't wonderful either , goalkeepers , centre backs and couple of attacking players are decent
glen Whelan one of the worst lrish player l have saw dunno how he managed to put on that green shirt
Most of the so called Irish supporters are west brits that "follow" their "home" teams via a boat or plane journey. Most of the so called Irish supporters couldnt find their way to Tolka or Tallaght stadiums.
Stevie wonder has better eye for a pass than glenn whelan
