Foot traffic is high on McCarren Park’s north edge, but Gus and Marty’s, the Greek American spot from the same owners as Williamsburg’s Egg Shop, is a big reason we should stop sleeping on the southside. If not for the remarkable made-to-order pita and creative takes on taverna cooking, for the list of Greek natural wines you’re not likely to find anywhere else.
I’d throw a buyout party here just as soon as I’d stop in for date night. In the summer, the entire front wall of windows opens up, wafting the park’s energy indoors. And the back dining room, with its high ceilings and cozy lighting, is exactly where I want to tuck into a plate of moussaka during the colder months.
Gus & Marty’s actually sells their proprietary, single-estate olive oil made from cold-pressed kalamatas sourced from the cofounder’s family groves just outside Athens. Now, if only they had some way of packaging that perfect pita for us to enjoy at home, too.
