ATHENS – Iconic Greek artist Dionysis Savvopoulos was laid to his final rest at the First Cemetery of Athens. The funeral procession arrived shortly after 3:15 p.m., accompanied by the songs of the beloved musician Nionios. “Synnefula,” “As Kratisoun oi Choroi,” and “Mi Milas Allo g’ Agapi” were among the tunes heard throughout the burial.
Earlier, a funeral service was held at the Athens Metropolitan Cathedral amid a somber atmosphere. Savvopoulos, who passed away at the age of 81, left behind a tremendous legacy as well as an irreplaceable void.
From 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., his body lay in the cathedral chapel, where a large crowd—including members of the public, politicians, artists, relatives, and friends—paid their last respects to the extraordinary creator who had left a lasting mark on Greek music.
Eulogies were delivered by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, former President Katerina Sakellaropoulou, Dimitra Galani, Alkinoos Ioannidis, Giorgos Skabardonis, Savvopoulos’s son and grandson, Stamatis Fasoulis, Dr. A. Kotanidou, and A. Kyritsopoulos.
In his eulogy, Prime Minister Mitsotakis spoke with deep emotion about Savvopoulos, describing him as the “Chronicler of the Modern Greek Journey for half a century.”
