The funeral for Dionysis Savvopoulos, the influential Greek songwriter who died on Tuesday at the age of 80, will be held at the First Cemetery of Athens on Saturday.
The funeral will take place at public expense, according to a joint ministerial decision.
Savvopoulos had been hospitalized at Hygeia Hospital since Friday afternoon. He had been battling cancer for several years.
Widely known by his nickname Nionios, Savvopoulos was a central figure in Greek music and cultural life from the 1960s onward. He rose to prominence during the 1967-1974 military dictatorship with songs that blended allegory, politics and folk traditions. His debut album, Fortigo, marked the start of a decades-long career defined by artistic dissent, poetic lyrics and live performances that captivated audiences across generations.
