Public transportation in Athens and Thessaloniki will be disrupted for several hours on Wednesday, October. 1, as transport workers will join a 24-hour nationwide strike against the government’s new labor bill.
In Athens, public buses will run only from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., with work stoppages before and after, while all three metro lines will operate between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. to help protesters reach rallies.
In Thessaloniki, staff voted unanimously to strike for the full day.
The Panhellenic Railway Federation also voted to join the strike, with Hellenic Train expected to announce cancellations. Taxi drivers, represented by the Attica Taxi Drivers’ Union (SATA), and seafarers under the Panhellenic Seamen’s Federation (PNO) confirmed their participation, along with air traffic controllers.
Aegean Airlines announced that passengers traveling on October 1 may reschedule without fees or cancel for a voucher.
The labor bill, titled “Fair Work for All,” allows for four-day, 10-hour workweeks, individual contracts, and up to 13 hours of daily work under certain conditions. It extends the reference period for adjusting working hours from six to 12 months, and permits voluntary overtime of up to four hours per day, paid at a 40% premium.
