Greek Cabbage with Rice – Lahanorizo / Λαχανόρυζο. Recipe by Always Yummy!



As known traditional Greek cuisine is marked by ease but Greeks have a talent to cook tasty and original food of simple products, we must give them that. Here is one of proofs Lahanorizo / Λαχανόρυζο, translated as cabbage and rice. It is fast to cook, tasty and hearty – Greek style.

✅ Ingredients:
• white cabbage – 2 lb | 900 g
• bulb onion – 7 oz | 200 g
• carrot – 4 oz | 120 g
• rice – 7 oz | 200 g
• crushed tomatoes – 9 oz | 250 g
• sugar – 1 tbsp
• water – 3 cup | 700 ml
• lemon juice – 2 tbsp
• olive oil – ⅓ cup | 80 ml
• ground black pepper (to taste) – ½ tsp
• salt (to taste) – 1 tsp
• fresh parsley – 2 tbsp | 10 g

✅ You will need:
• saucepan
• carving board
• bowl

📙 Preparation:
1. Cut the bulb onion, carrot and cabbage into thin strips.
2. Heat the olive oil in a saucepan and fry the onion over medium heat for 4 minutes.
3. Add the carrot and cabbage and fry over low heat for 5 minutes then cover a lid and simmer for another 5 minutes.
4. Add the crushed tomatoes, salt, pepper, sugar and rice washed with cold water and stir well.
5. Pour in the water, bring to a boil, cover the lid and simmer for 20 minutes until readiness.
6. Sprinkle your lahanorizo with chopped up parsley and serve to the table.
