RockOverdose: If you could describe Nailed to Obscurity with three words to someone who doesn’t know you, which would these three words be?

NAILED TO OBSCURITY: Dark, emotional, melodic

RockOverdose: What is that you wanted to achieve when you first got together and formed the band?

NAILED TO OBSCURITY: Honestly, we did not really have specific goals in mind. We just enjoyed finally being able to play together with real drums and other teenagers that enjoyed doing this as much as we did. We wanted to be like our idols, so that was the main motivation, and we simply liked the idea of playing in a band. So, at first, the goal was to actually get a band together and to be able to jam. Then we started writing music, so the new goal was to play a show. It just evolved like that.

RockOverdose: What is the element that bonds you all as a team?

NAILED TO OBSCURITY: There is probably not one specific thing that bonds us all. Apart from the obvious – the music itself – it’s the fact that we are all friends and we’ve known each other for such a long time. Volker and I know each other since we were like 3 years old. Jann joined the band when we were still teenagers, and when we met Raimund we were still in our early twenties. Even Lutz, who just recently joined the band, has been a friend since teenage times and he used to tour with us as a lighting engineer for many years.

RockOverdose: What is a memorable moment from a live performance?

NAILED TO OBSCURITY: There are so many good — and also a few bad — ones. It’s hard to pick just one. It was mind-blowing to play a big festival show like Wacken for the very first time. It was amazing to play our first bigger club shows alongside bands like Arch Enemy or Paradise Lost’s album release show. When we played in Mexico many years ago, it was a fantastic experience, and every single tour in Europe and North America were amazing experiences too. And even after so many shows and such a long time there are always new things to look forward to — like these shows we are playing in Athens and Thessaloniki now. It’s the first time we are going to play in Greece and we are super excited about it.

RockOverdose: You just released your new album, “Generation of the Void”. Is there a main idea behind the album? What is the goal you aimed to achieve with this release?

NAILED TO OBSCURITY: It’s not a concept album, if that’s what you mean by a main idea behind it. But of course, this album was written as such, with a certain flow in mind and a vision of how we wanted it to sound: dynamic, atmospheric, and deep. What was important to us as well is the two layers the album can be interpreted. The lyrics are very personal and deeply emotional, but on a second layer they all carry a political statement as well. This is why we chose the album title, since “Generation Of The Void” can mean all these things.

RockOverdose: Were there any challenges in the making of “Generation of the Void”? Any favorite moments?

NAILED TO OBSCURITY: The pandemic clearly was a huge challenge. We had to change the way we were used to writing music together, because all of a sudden we could not get together anymore. This took some time, but we quickly learned to accommodate to the circumstances and turned it into something good and fruitful — which I think is a positive result of this negative time. Another challenge was that after the pandemic we played so many shows that we didn’t have time to work on the album for another year 😀 But we needed it after such a long time without playing shows, so that was a good reason in that sense.

RockOverdose: What lies behind the cover of the album?

NAILED TO OBSCURITY: The artwork is showing Giannis’ interpretation of “The Void”, tying in the idea of two layers as mentioned before. This was a true challenge since the idea is so abstract, but we think Giannis really nailed it here. And since he is from Greece, we will finally be able to meet him in person — which is really awesome.

RockOverdose: Which is your favorite track and why (for each one of you)?

NAILED TO OBSCURITY: This sounds a bit lame, but honestly, we like them all equally. We worked so much and so long on these songs that there is really nothing we don’t like. No compromises or anything like that. There is a reason why we released five singles/videos — and we would have made videos and single releases for every song if we had the money and time for it 😀

RockOverdose: What lies ahead for Nailed to Obscurity?

NAILED TO OBSCURITY: In a few days we’ll play the two shows in Greece and one in Istanbul right after. Then in the fall we are going to play a headline run in Europe. We are planning some really cool things for next year, but those are not official or cannot be announced yet.
