A beautiful island in Greece is beloved by celebrities and royals alike. The Prince and Princess of Wales, along with their children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, have recently returned from a summer holiday in Greece.
The family is said to have spent much of their time sailing around western Greece, visiting multiple destinations. However, it is Kefalonia, the largest of the Ionian islands, where the family supposedly spent the majority of their time. Iglu Cruise reports that Google searches for Kefalonia increased by 65% in the last 30 days, following the family’s visit to the Greek island. Travel experts at Iglu Cruise said: “Kefalonia is a fantastic holiday destination, often regarded as a hidden gem of Greece. During the summer, you’ll find fewer crowds compared to popular islands such as Santorini, Crete, Rhodes or Corfu, making it perfect for those looking to unwind and relax.”
But it is not only the Royal Family that seems to enjoy the beautiful island of Kefalonia. The filming of Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, starring Nicholas Cage and Penelope Cruz, brought the island to a broader audience.
Other A-list celebrities, such as Tom Hanks, Madonna, and Demi Moore, have holidayed in Fiskardo, a village on the northern tip of the island.
In July, Kylie Jenner brought her family on a superyacht to the island, while she island hopped around Greece. The island is a popular destination for yachting. It offers a variety of options for yacht charters, from bareboat rentals to fully crewed luxury experiences.
Visitors are drawn to Kefalonia for its blend of natural beauty, luxurious amenities, and privacy compared to more mainstream Greek islands.
The island offers picturesque villages like Assos and Fiskardo, and stunning beaches like Myrtos, the sixth best beach in Greece according to Tripadvisor.
Myrtos is famed for its dramatic natural beauty, characterised by turquoise waters, white pebbles, and towering cliffs. Located on the west coast, Myrtos is also a great spot to catch the sunset.
Those visiting Kefalonia can also enjoy natural wonders such as the beautiful Melissani Cave, located northwest of Sami, on the island’s eastern coast. Tripadvisor lists Melissani Cave as the second-best thing to do on the island.
The geological formation, with a collapsed roof revealing the blue-green waters of its underground lake, is also a unique major draw. The cave also has a rich history, steeped in Greek mythology and associated with the nymph Melissanthi and the god Pan.
