Greek gods, girls’ night, gambling seniors


Theatre productions about nursing home escapees, a Greek mythology-obsessed drag club, and five friends bonding over a girls’ night out will come to the Baltimore area in July.

Clyde’s, ongoing through July 6, Spotlighters Theatre. Formerly incarcerated individuals get a second chance as the kitchen staff at a truck stop sandwich shop, where they seek to redeem their lives, find purpose, and create the perfect sandwich.

Julius Caesar, ongoing through July 20, Patapsco Female Institute Historic Park. Chesapeake Shakespeare Company will perform William Shakespeare’s play “Julius Caesar,” about the plot to assassinate Roman general and dictator of the same name. Performances will take place at Patapsco Female Institute Historic Park in Ellicott City.

It’s The Comedy of Errors, Hon!, ongoing through Saturday, Aug. 9, various locations. Chesapeake Shakespeare Company is bringing theatre directly to audiences across Maryland with a reimagining of William Shakespeare’s “The Comedy of Errors,” featuring Baltimore and Maryland icons. As part of their Shakespeare Beyond series, the theatre company will perform in parks and other venues throughout the state, including several in Baltimore City. The Little Mermaid, ongoing through Aug. 17, Toby’s Dinner Theatre. Venture under the sea for this beloved Disney classic, as young mermaid Ariel’s fascination with humans leads her to try to be part of their world — and seek love with Prince Eric.

Variations on Night, July 11 through July 27 (preview on July 10), Strand Theater. Rapid Lemon Productions will present Baltimore’s 21st annual 10-minute play festival, “Variations on Night.” The festival will include local authors’ 10-minute plays based on the winning theme of last year’s audience vote: night. The plays will include “Light Strikes a Deal” by Meri Robie; “Night Crawlers: A Coming-of-Age Story” by Isaiah C. Evans; “Son of My Son’s Son” by Dwight R.B. Cook; “Night Hawks” by Jalice Ortiz-Corral; “Who is She” by Kristen Wheeler; “Bar Noir” by Jonathan Tycko; “Fanann” by Tad Cleaves; “Meeting at Midnight” by Janis Hannon; “Another Dark Night of the Soul” by Clarinda Harriss; “Thank Myrnis” by Felicia Barr; “The Switch” by Iman Michele Dancy; “The Nicest Hotel in All of Iceland” by Allegra Hatem. Audience members will also vote on the them for the 2026 Variations Project.

Disney Musical Revue, July 16, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., Gordon Center for Performing Arts, 3506 Gwynnbrook Ave. Young artists from J Camp’s Children’s Theatre Production Camp will perform Disney songs and dances in this musical revue.

The Ice Room and The Typewriter, July 22, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., Strand Theater. Two one-act plays will make their Baltimore debuts: Liz Maestri’s Evangelical comedy “The Ice Room,” about vacation bible school, infidelity, and crushed dreams; and Taariq Saadiq’s dramedy “The Typewriter,” about a typewriter that upheave’s a relationship and unearths secrets.

The Grotto, July 24 through July 27, Zion Church of the City of Baltimore, 400 E. Lexington St. The Baltimore Playwrights Festival will present “The Grotto,” which follows the children of Zeus as they find their lives intertwined with drag queens at a Greek mythology-obsessed drag club in Athens, Georgia.

The Gambler, July 25 through July 27, Le Mondo. In “The Gambler,” nursing home residents Doris and Gertie fly the coop on a quest for life before death. Inspired by Fyodor Dostoevsky’s novel of the same name, this production makes its Baltimore premiere through a partnership between Baltimore’s Le Mondo and Brooklyn, New York City’s Exponential Festival.

Girls Night the Musical, July 26, 3 p.m. and 7 p.m., M&T Bank Exchange. During a girls’ night out, five friends celebrate their past, present, and future — all through popular 80s and 90s songs.
