Regulars at a certain restaurant in Newcastle will have to find somewhere to eat, at least for the next few weeks, as it’s shut down to allow for an extensive refurbishment to take place. And its owners are promising that the end result will be something quite stunning.

If you ask anyone familiar with Newcastle where the best place to for Greek food, we can almost 100% guarantee that they’ll reply straight away with one word…Kafeneon. Having occupied a building in the prime location of the bustling location of the Bigg Market for years, Kafeneon has been a longstanding favourite of not just Geordie diners, but also visitors to Newcastle city centre.

The popular restaurant caused some panic earlier on this month, when they shared a post on Facebook with the rather dramatic opening: ‘*Important customer announcement* Very sad to say Kafeneon will be closing down on June 23rd.” However, having feared the worst, there was then some much needed relief for customers, when the statement thankfully added: “Wait! Don’t panic!! .. We will be back and better than ever on the 3rd of July after some well deserved staff holidays and a very exciting “Old Town Greek Taverna” refurbishment of our ground floor and bar area.”

Kafeneon’s last weekend of trading this month came at a time when the whole of town was absolutely packed, thanks to Sam Fender’s three gigs at St James’ Park. Nearly every pub, bar and restaurant in town was full to the rafters, as in excess of 150,000 headed up to the stadium to see the People Watching star in action over the course of June 12, 14 and 15 and Kafeneon revealed that they themselves had served over 2,400 of them.

The focus of Kafeneon’s refurb is its tucked away ground floor space, which is being turned into an Old Greek Taverna, which will be given some added authenticity, thanks to its flooring being made up of Greek cobbled stones.
