The Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Google have unveiled Greek Art Now, an extensive online exhibition on the Google Arts & Culture platform that makes Greece’s modern and contemporary art markedly more accessible to a global audience.
Presented at the National Museum of Contemporary Art (EMST) in Athens, the project brings together holdings from three flagship institutions: the National Gallery – Alexandros Soutsos Museum, the EMST and Thessaloniki’s MOMus network comprising of the Museum of Modern Art-Kostaskis Collection, Museum of Contemporary Art, Thessaloniki Museum of Photography, the Experimental Center for the Arts and the Alex Mylonas Museum.
More than 60 digital stories, 1,800 ultra-high-resolution images, and seven virtual tours chart Greek art from the 19th century to the present. Visitors can zoom in on individual brushstrokes via Art Camera, dismantle and reassemble selected works in interactive mode, and—through the new Pocket Gallery A World Without Blue—use their smartphones for augmented-reality explorations.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Culture Minister Lina Mendoni joined Google executives at EMST for the official launch.
“Convincing the world that Greece is not only its glorious past but also its present and future is central to our cultural policy.” Mitsotakis said.
Managing Director of Google Southeast Europe, Peggy Antonakou, also added that the partnership makes Greek art “accessible to everyone, without geographic or time limitations.”
