Darwin’s Greek GleNTi draws 40,000 in celebration of the Top-End’s Greek culture and community

Darwin’s iconic Greek GleNTi was a resounding success over the weekend, attracting more than 40,000 people to the city’s Esplanade for a celebration of Greek culture, food, dance, and music.

From early Saturday morning, local radio stations were abuzz, promoting GleNTi as Darwin’s leading cultural event. By midday, the Esplanade was transformed into a vibrant sea of blue and white, alive with the aromas of souvlakia, the rhythms of Greek music, and the sound of laughter from families enjoying the festive atmosphere.

The event was a showcase of multiculturalism, with Greek culture at its heart, and families of all backgrounds joining in the festivities.

Michael Koulianos, President of the Greek Orthodox Community of North Australia (GOCNA), spoke to Neos Kosmos last week while rushing to set up. This week, he was doing the opposite.

“I’m now working with the rest of the team to pack everything up,” said a worn but happy Koulianos.

Despite some behind-the-scenes challenges, Koulianos said the event ran smoothly.

“Everything went well – we had a little bit of drama, but if there’s no drama, it’s not a Greek festival,” he laughed.

He credited the event’s success to the spirit and dedication of the volunteers.

“I’m very proud of all the volunteers, the dance groups, all the clubs and associations,” he said. “They all came together with community spirit to put on one of the biggest cultural festivals this weekend – it was fantastic.”

Koulianos was effusive in his praise for the wider community: “Thank you to everyone who attended, supported and shared in the festival and the Northern Territory’s Hellenic culture.”
