Internationally acclaimed Greek artist Apostolos Chantzaras has donated two original paintings to support the silent auction of the New York City-based Greek America Foundation‘s biannual fundraising and awards gala taking place on June 7th.
Chantzaras, widely regarded as one of Greece’s most important living artists, is known for his bold, expressive works that blend elements of Byzantine iconography, folk motifs, and contemporary pop culture. His pieces have been exhibited around the world and consistently attract top-tier collectors, with some selling for thousands of dollars at international auctions.

The two works donated—“Hero and Dragon” and “A Flower for You”—reflect the signature style that has made Chantzaras one of the most sought-after names in Greek contemporary art.

“Hero and Dragon” is a striking reimagining of the age-old St. George legend, featuring Chantzaras’ signature fiery reds and vivid iconographic symbolism. The painting captures both the power and mysticism of its subject, rendered in modern, stylized form.

“A Flower for You” is a vibrant floral composition infused with romantic energy and contemporary attitude. Painted with electric color and adorned with street-inspired graphic elements and handwritten phrases, the piece combines softness and boldness in a way that bridges fine art and urban storytelling.
While the artist has remained largely based in Greece, his work has reached global audiences, garnering acclaim in the mainstream art world. Not surprisingly, his work resonates particularly strongly with members of the Greek diaspora—- many of whom view Chantzaras as a cultural bridge between tradition and modernity.
The donation came after a conversation the artist had at one of his gallery shows in New York City over a year ago with Gregory C. Pappas, founder of the Greek America Foundation. The two spoke about their common love for Greece and how one was using his art to share the country’s heritage, and the other through charitable work.
Chantzaras was impressed that such a small organization could have such an important impact on his native country and offered his support instantly, not only with the two pieces of original art, but also to be present at the event.
He called the foundation’s work, especially its volunteer program that sends young North Americans to support vulnerable people in Greece every summer “unprecedented and innovative,” and committed his long term support for years to come.
Both pieces will be featured in the silent auction at the 2025 Gabby Awards Gala, a biennial black tie celebration that honors excellence in the Greek American community.
The auction is open to the general public and anyone can bid, even if they’re not attending the event on June 7th, just by registering on the auction website.
The artist’s donation marks one of the most high-profile contributions of contemporary Greek art to a Greek American philanthropic event in recent memory and underscores the growing intersection of art, identity, and transatlantic cultural exchange.
