Cats and the Canary revive golden era of Greek cinema with swing tribute show in Melbourne

Melbourne-based Greek swing band Cats and the Canary return to the stage this Sunday, 18 May, with a musical homage to the golden age of Greek cinema, performing at the Brunswick Ballroom.

In a night set to transport audiences to the nostalgic heart of 1960s and ’70s Greek film, the seven-piece ensemble will reimagine classics originally made famous by stars like Aliki Vougiouklaki, Tzeni Karezi, Melina Mercouri, Mary Linda, and Marinella.

Speaking to Neos Kosmos, bassist Odysseas Kripotos said the performance is a passion project inspired by the band’s shared love of Greek film music.

“We all grew up watching those films where music wasn’t just background—it was central to the story. This is our way of honouring that legacy.”

Backed by an energetic mix of bouzouki, trumpet, horns, electric guitar, drums, and accordion, the group brings a rich, full-bodied sound to the stage.

“We don’t do full shows often, so when we do, we want them to be really special,” Kripotos added.

“The first time we did this tribute was in 2020, and while it was a great success, many people didn’t get the chance to see it.”

The setlist will span reimagined classics from the Greek silver screen as well as swing-infused renditions of songs by Tsitsanis, Vamvakaris, and newer favourites like Rena Morfi, Gadjo Dilo, and traditional Greek folk.

“It’s a bit of everything,” said Kripotos, “and the chemistry of the group—coming from different musical backgrounds—brings a unique flavour to the performance.”
