A major digital transformation project is underway across Greece’s cultural sites, aimed at modernizing the visitor experience and safeguarding heritage through cutting-edge technology.
The initiative – led by the Organization for the Management and Development of Cultural Resources (ODAP) in partnership with the Greek Culture Ministry – is backed by 27.28 million euros in funding from the EU Recovery and Resilience Facility.
The effort includes the rollout of interactive technologies, advanced digital tools, and smart infrastructure at 107 museums and archaeological sites nationwide.
According to the Culture Ministry, the goal is to deliver universal accessibility, personalized services, and a more immersive connection to history.
“We are advancing the digital transformation of archaeological and museum services in line with our strategic commitment to sustainable cultural development,” said Culture Minister Lina Mendoni. She noted that the project aims to enrich both domestic and international visitors’ experience through innovative platforms and tools.

With a 14-month implementation timeline, the project will introduce:
– A unified ticketing and access control system at 107 sites, covering the majority of national cultural traffic
– A digital membership platform (Hellenic Heritage Web App) to engage users beyond physical visits
– Interactive virtual guides in eight languages – including Greek Sign Language – for 40 flagship locations
– Augmented reality (AR) experiences at five key sites – Sounion, Delos, the Asclepieion of Kos, the Rotunda of Thessaloniki, and the Ancient Agora of Athens – and virtual reality (VR) applications at Ancient Olympia
– Smart signage, QR codes, and real-time content at 30 locations
– Advanced visitor monitoring and asset protection systems
– Support services including maintenance, training, and onboarding for site staff

Blending innovation with heritage stewardship
ODAP Chair Nicoletta Divari-Valakou described the project as a milestone in the modernization of Greece’s cultural infrastructure.
“By combining technological innovation with heritage management, we are elevating the visitor experience and promoting Greece’s cultural wealth to a global audience,” she said.
The project is being implemented by the OTE – SingularLogic – Radiant consortium, selected through an international tender.
According to the Culture Ministry, as Greece embraces a digital future for its ancient treasures, the initiative marks a new chapter – where history and technology converge to inform, inspire, and connect.
