King David School (KDS) was thrilled with their senior musical production of Mamma Mia! performed from April 6 to 8, where their talented students were able to shine on stage.
The story takes place on a Greek island and centres on a young girl Sophie, who dreams of a wedding where her father gives her away at the altar. But the problem is, she doesn’t know who her dad is! It is a jukebox musical written by British playwright Catherine Johnson, originally conceived by Judy Craymer, based on songs recorded by Swedish group ABBA. The musical’s title is taken from the group’s 1975 chart-topper Mamma Mia.
The KDS production also utilised ancient Greek theatre conventions, such as the use of masks and the inclusion of a Greek chorus. And it seems all generations who attended the musical, from baby boomers to Gen Z were able to find joy in ABBA’s iconic toe-tapping music.
“ABBA’s music has such timeless appeal, it seemed everyone who attended, young and not so young, were swept off their feet! From Money, Money, Money to I Do, I Do, I Do, our students danced and sang their way through the ABBA catalogue and into our hearts.”

“Each character, from Sophie and Donna to the quirky Tanya, Rosie, and the three possible fathers, was brought to life with charm and humour, providing an unforgettable theatrical experience for everyone. The contribution by so many King David alumni to the success of the show was heartwarming,” KDS said.
KDS thanked the cast and crew for a fabulous production, including director/producer Eli Erez, musical director Matan Franco, choreographers Eden Abukasis and Amalia Wise, costume designers Rylee Sack and Dee Skinner and assistant director Charli Cantoni-Bud.
Erez wrote in the program, “This production would not be possible without the school’s incredible support of the performing arts. At KDS, an understanding of education and life skills benefits of the performing arts is woven into the fabric of the school and its ethos.”
