Ferries in Greece will remain docked for 24 hours on Thursday, May 1, as the Pan-Hellenic Seamen’s Federation (PNO) joins Labor Day mobilizations announced by the General Confederation of Greek Labor (GSEE).
The strike will affect all categories of passenger and cargo ships and will run from 00:01 to 24:00.
According to an announcement by the PNO, Greek seafarers are protesting rising unemployment, uninsured labor, and the lack of enforcement of collective labor agreements and labor legislation. The federation is also calling for the abolition of anti-labor provisions that undermine trade union rights.
Additional demands include improved medical care for active crew members and financial relief for retired seafarers, specifically through the timely disbursement of pensions and lump-sum benefits.
On the education front, the PNO highlights the need to preserve the public and free character of maritime training. It also advocates for curriculum updates aligned with new environmental and technological standards, such as decarbonization and the green transition.
The strike is expected to significantly disrupt coastal ferry routes across the country. Port authorities and shipping companies are urging passengers to check for updates and confirm their travel plans.
