Greece’s women’s national water polo team made history on Sunday by clinching their first-ever World Cup gold medal, defeating Hungary 13–9 in a dominant performance in the final.
In a landmark victory at the World Cup final in Chengdu, China, the Greek team delivered a stunning display of tactical discipline and relentless defence, taking the lead from the first quarter and never looking back.
Under coach Haris Pavlidis, Greece opened the match with a strong offensive showing, winning the first quarter 5–4. Sisters Vasiliki and Eleftheria Plevritou struck early, with Tricha adding a highlight-reel lob for a 3–2 advantage. Hungary narrowed the gap before the quarter ended, but it was Greece who maintained control.
From the second quarter on, the Greek side shut down Hungary’s offence with textbook defending. Goalkeeper Tzourka stood firm between the posts, anchoring a defensive effort that left Hungary scoreless in the second period. Xenaki scored the only goal of the quarter, putting Greece ahead with momentum they never relinquished.
