Cyprus school Nazi salute incident sparks investigation by education ministry

A controversy has erupted over a photograph of secondary school students in the Famagusta district making what appears to be a Nazi salute.

The issue came to light yesterday after the Famagusta District Committee of AKEL shared the image, which reportedly dates back to last week. According to AKEL’s complaint, the act occurred with the tolerance of a teacher, despite the reaction of a colleague.

The incident has sparked strong reactions from parents, prompting the Minister of Education to order an investigation. Today, a report of the events will be submitted to the Secondary Education Directorate. As the Director of Secondary Education at the Ministry of Education Nikolas Yiasoumis, told philenews, the report aims “to clarify exactly what happened” and will be forwarded to the Minister.

AKEL MP Nikos Kettiros called for a full investigation into the incident. Speaking to philenews, he stated that he was informed that “today the headteacher held meetings with reacting parents and told them that he would take measures to ensure that such a phenomenon does not happen again and that action will be taken to explain to the children.”

He further noted that this is a dangerous and worrying phenomenon. “These issues are not a joke, as some write online who want to attribute it either to a joke or to an ancient Greek salute. First, they need to learn history about what Greece itself suffered from Nazism and fascism. Our goal is not to accuse the children themselves, but it is something that should shake us and we need to talk to our children to teach them history correctly. They need to learn what the world suffered from such sick ‘ideologies’.”
