Musicians will pay tribute to sounds of Ancient Greece in Parksville

Three musicians from Greece will travel to Parksville to play traditional music on handcrafted instruments that hearken back thousands of years.

Thanasis Kleopas, Theodore Koumartzis and Marios Podaras will play a concert that pays tribute to Ancient Greece at Knox United Church on March 27.

Kleopas is a world-renowned lyre player who has performed cross the globe, including China, France, Japan, Italy, India, Germany and Switzerland, according to a news release.

He draws inspiration from Greek folk music to compose emotion-provoking melodies and his compositions are a testament to his love for his Greek origins and ancient world music.

Koumartzis is a lyre player and the visionary behind the pioneering SEIKILO Museum of Ancient Music in Thessaloniki. Being an integral part of the Luthieros family of luthiers, he had the chance to participate with the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the Hellenic University of Greece to research and develop several ancient musical instruments.

Podaras is an experienced musician focusing on ancient and contemporary string instruments, such as the pandura and the violin. His extensive education in classical music began at the age of four and continues to this day.

The concert will have a hybrid listening format, so people can enjoy the show sitting in the rows, or as a healing sound bath (bring a yoga mat, blanket or pillow) laying on the floor.

The show goes from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

Tickets are $44 and are available online through Eventbrite

The concert is presented by Narissa Young, with Sea of Sound and Eva Grodt of Shift in Action.
