It was March 7th, 2024, when “Zari” by Marina Satti was released and it immediately became the talk of the town around Greece and beyond.
Since October 2023, when it was announced that Marina Satti would represent Greece, the Greek public and the media have shown enthusiasm for their participation. In a special broadcast on March 7th, 2024, the video clip of the song Zari , directed by Zac Dov Wiesel of Australian origin, was broadcast for the first time. The video clip had a catchy choreography by Irini Damianidou and showed footage of the “touristic” center of Athens (Acropolis, Plaka, Monastiraki) without being embellished.
The video clip may have divided the Greek media, but Zari managed to be heard everywhere and become the song of the year. Marina Satti was even the most searched person for by Google search engines. The most important thing is that Eurovision started to concern Greece again and that we showed something modern and competitive in the contest, beyond the 11th place that it eventually achieved.
“Zari” and the charts success
Immediately after its release, “Zari” went viral in Greece and many countries abroad. For several weeks it was at the top of the domestic Airplay and Spotify Chart, while it was No. 1 in YouTube trends. This translates into over 25 million views of the video clip, 11 million views of the Grand Final live performance and 6 million in the Semi-Final. Accordingly, on Spotify with 32,681,634 plays it is the most successful Greek entry in Eurovision in history and one of the most played songs in the Greek language ever.
In fact, last January, Marina Satti’s multi-platinum POP album was awarded at a special event in Floyd. She became the #1 Spotify Artist and is the first female artist to be #1 on the Daily Top Artists Greece chart on Spotify , while she was also the first to simultaneously occupy the top three positions on both the daily Spotify Top200 and YouTube trends in Greece. Her “POP” was embraced by the domestic and international audience, ranking 8th among the 10 most popular new albums in the world, with her “Zari” becoming the first song with Greek lyrics in history to occupy a position (#17) on the list of the 50 most popular viral songs on Spotify worldwide.
The Eurovision live performance
Marina Satti’s performance at Eurovision was made by a team of experienced artists. The artistic director was Fokas Evangelinos -expert in directing in Eurovision-, the choreography was by Mecnun Giasar and the graphic visuals were made by the NMR group. On stage, she was accompanied by dancers Irene Damianidou, Hüso Çetintaş, Yasin AO and Vasilis Karagiannis. The main concept of her appearance was the extensive use of one-shot, the use of tik tok and a modern choreography. One of the characteristic points was when the dancers took off their scarves and danced traditionally and of course Marina’s dance break.
Greece with Marina Satti competed in the second Semi-Final on May 9, 2024 and then in the Grand Final on May 11, 2024. In fact, in this year’s event we saw as interval acts Elena Paparizou with My Number One and Eleni Foureira with Fuego . “Zari” as the Greek entry collected 126 points, winning 11th place , while in the Semi-Final it had come out 5th with 86 points.
