DEFACEMENT (NL) – the Uthrecht-located band are ready to bring their perfect blend of death/black metal for the first time in Greece, causing uneasiness, melancholy and abyssal turmoil over Athens, this Friday – February 21st @ An Club.
We reached out to Khalil Azagoth, one of the two founding members and guitarist, to discuss their story so far, as well as future plans and expectations from their first visit to Greece.
Read below.
RockOverdose: First of all our congratulations for the quality of “Duality”, I think it’s safe to say it’s your finest hour, until the next one. How has it been received so far in the 7 months of its release?
Defacement: Some people liked it and some hated it, opinions are subjective depending on what people are used to.
RockOverdose: We would like to know what happened after the release of “Defacement” with the whole pandemic being the talk of the world back then, how much was the band affected and how stronger did it become after this drawback?
Defacement: In the time of the pandemic I started studying jazz and since we don’t have any rehearsals and I was focused on composing and practicing
RockOverdose: We see the durations of the songs getting bigger with years passing by, with the title track of “Duality” surpassing 16’. Do you believe that a song stops when it feels done in your mind? The structures have a lot of information, how easy or difficult is the whole material composed?
Defacement: Well, composing is not an easy task. And it’s also demanding for a lot of imagination, time and effort. As for the duration, it’s more like a story telling and stops when the story is told.
RockOverdose: You have had quite an adventure until you resided in Netherlands. We would like to know what experiences you drew from Lybia to Ukraine and then to Netherlands and which were the conditions in Ukraine so that you didn’t stay there to establish the band as a base.
Defacement: We were students in Ukraine and we finished our studies then we had to start over and keep playing music
RockOverdose: The songs are entitled with one word only. The power of one word emphasizes the “less is more” moto in your mind? Or is it a way to state “we let the music do the talking, this is it, take it or leave it”?
Defacement: Your guessing was right, it’s how you described it. Glad that it’s understood as we intended.
RockOverdose: Obviously the question has been asked again, but we would like to know if there is a symbolism of each album starting with the D letter, which is the starting letter of the band as well.
Defacement: We don’t know
RockOverdose: The sound of the band is a great mix of extreme ideas, but with “Duality” there has been let’s say a light in the dark with some more melody. How much limiting is for a band to go under genres or monikers? I always said that good music remains good, no matter how you call it. Which is your opinion about that?
Defacement: In terms of composing, I’m not feeling limited. I also don’t compose music with the intention of combining genres. There’s a sense and information or phrasing of something and it feels ok in terms of melody or groove regardless of how it’s received.
RockOverdose: We know that you prefer to talk with actions and not words, but is the response of “Duality” this time and the previous albums in the past a motive for you to go on doing your thing in your own special way? Are you fully satisfied with what you have achieved so far?
Defacement: Of course I’m satisfied so far, but still think I didn’t present the best I’m having. and I’m longing to grow more and more and there’s much I still don’t know and need to work on!
RockOverdose: You are visiting Greece for the first time, in the right moment I could say. What should we wait from your performance, maybe playing the whole “Duality” and some extra tracks? Are you familiar with Chthon and Kvadrat that will accompany you?
Defacement: We’re playing songs from the self titled, duality and 2 new songs from our next album. We rehearsed them last week for the first time and we’re playing them live for the first time.
Yes of course, and this is a sick line up. Kvadrat is also released through Total dissonance worship and we’re looking forward to seeing both bands live and being in Greece for the first time.
RockOverdose: We would like to thank you for your time. I know it might be early given that the album is only 7 months old, but do you have any future plans or worked ideas for a next album and gigs? See you in Athens soon!
Defacement: Our upcoming album is ready, drums have been recorded. After the Greece show, we’ll finish the recording of guitars and vocals and in may we’re touring with siderean. These are our upcoming plans for this year. We hope the album will be released in July.
