Delivery drivers in Greece are increasingly violating traffic laws under the pressure of quick order deliveries, experts warn. Common infractions include running stop signs, driving against traffic, and ignoring red lights.
“Delivery drivers contribute to road chaos but are not its sole cause,” says Thanasis Choundras, a safety instructor who trains delivery professionals. Industry estimates suggest over 50,000 drivers work nationwide, many informally.
Studies highlight the challenges: long hours without breaks, leading to carelessness and higher accident risks. One analysis showed a serious injury occurs approximately every 2.5 days, with 64% of drivers involved in accidents at least once.
Experts suggest shared accountability, proposing fines for both drivers and their employers to curb violations. While most drivers wear helmets, behavior like illegal parking and reckless driving persists. “Balancing speed and safety remains a tough equation,” notes Aris Zografos, head of a driving instructors’ association.
