A classic play about the devastating impact of war will premiere on Mercer University’s Macon campus with Mercer Theatre’s production of “The Trojan Women.”
Written by Euripides in fifth century B.C., “The Trojan Women” is about the people who are left at the end of the famous Trojan War. From the gods of Greek mythology to widows in mourning, Euripides highlights the suffering of postwar communities to contrast traditional stories of heroism during fighting.
“We are excited about being able to produce something that is as relevant to today as it was in ancient times,” said Frani Rollins, associate professor of theatre. “The suffering and resilience of these women in war and the powerful portrayal of loss and endurance resonates deeply and offers a stark reminder of the human cost of conflict.”
The play will be led by guest director Jeffrey Green, former professor at Georgia Southwestern State University, who is teaching a course at Mercer in period styles.
“The Trojan Women” runs from Feb. 13-23, with shows on Thursdays-Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 general admission and $10 for Mercer students, faculty and staff. Purchase online at tickets.mercer.edu.
“Mercer Theatre is very proud to be at this moment in history where we can provide reminders of loss, endurance and resilience in a powerful and engaging performance that audiences will love,” Rollins said.
The final show in the Mercer Theatre season will be a student-led cabaret on April 3-6. Mercer Theatre welcomes anyone to get involved in their productions throughout the year, even those who have not previously taken a theater class. To get involved, contact Rollins at rollins_f@mercer.edu
