In a significant breakthrough, the Property Crimes Unit of the Organized Crime Division has successfully solved the notorious burglary case that occurred during Easter 2008 in Kifisia. The burglars employed the infamous “rififi” method, making away with money and valuables totaling over 4 million euros from a bank branch.
The intricate crime involved unidentified individuals who managed to break in through a window, accessing the bank’s main safe and vaults to execute their heist using the sophisticated rififi technique.
Ongoing investigations, in collaboration with the Forensic Investigations Division, led to the re-evaluation of evidence from the crime scene. Utilizing international databases, a foreign national was identified and linked to the crime with the help of cross-border cooperation adhering to the Prüm Decisions.
The suspect, a 53-year-old currently imprisoned in France, has a history of similar offenses and has previously drawn the attention of authorities in Germany and Kosovo.
Further forensic analysis connected the suspect to another attempted burglary in 2009 at a bank in Attica and the 2010 theft of a safe and ATM from a supermarket in Crete.
The comprehensive case file has been submitted to the prosecutorial authorities, while investigations continue to ascertain potential connections to other similar criminal activities.
