Renowned Greek singer Kaity Grey, a key figure in popular Greek music who passed away last Sunday at the age of 100, was bid farewell by a large number of fans, relatives and friends who attended her funeral service on Wednesday in Athens’ Nea Smyrni district.

Attendants, honoring the wishes of the singer who was adopted and raised in Piraeus, performed two of her favorite songs, ‘Xena Heria’ (Stranger’s Hands) and ‘To Vouno’ (The Mountain), by her burial site.

These songs were just a couple of many hits Grey achieved throughout her decades-long career.

Born Athanasia Gizili on the island of Samos in 1924, she began her career as an actress before establishing herself as one of her generation’s most prominent vocalists in Greek music.

She sung on the original versions of Greek standards recorded by music legends such as Markos Vamvakaris, Vassilis Tsitsanis and Giannis Papaioannou, all early rebetika greats.

The singer, who passed away at her home, had been battling health issues, including a stroke in October. Prior to the funeral service, her body lay in repose for three hours.
