A minute with: Thomas Kettenis, Triathlete


Where do you live?
I live in an apartment in Aglandjia with my partner.

What did you have for breakfast?
Nothing. I am on intermittent fasting.

Describe your perfect day
The day starts with exercise, a run in the park or cycling out of town. Returning home and then going for coffee and an outing to the seaside with our dog for a swim and relaxation, lunch out and a walk along the coast. Then going back home, preparing dinner, relaxing and watching a movie in the evening.

Best book ever read?
Stieg Larsson’s trilogy The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. The plot of the books, the suspense and the way the stories unfold.

Best childhood memory?
Summer holidays in Polis Chrysochous

What is always in your fridge?
Water, vegetables, yoghurt, soft drinks, vegan milk.

What music are you listening to in the car at the moment?
Sophisticated Greek music.

What’s your spirit animal?
The dog, due to their selfless love and the empathy they possess.

What are you most proud of?
The fact that I am going to be a father.

What movie scene has really stayed with you?
In the movie Hachikō, the scene where Hachikō is waiting at the train station in the snow. It shook me.

If you could pick anyone at all (alive or dead) to go out for the evening with, who would it be?
My grandfather, whose namesake I am, to tell him how I have evolved in my life and to hear him talk to me.

If you could time travel when/where would you go?
To 2100 to see how the world will be after I’m gone.

What is your greatest fear?
Losing people I love.

What would you say to your 18-year-old self?
To live every day, to love (including himself) and dare.

Name the one thing that would stop you dating someone
Being a narcissist.

If the world is ending in 24 hours, what would you do?
I would go to the sea with my partner.

Thomas is a journalist, covering current affairs. He is also an avid athlete taking part in competitions, including Iron Man in Cyprus and abroad. For 2025, he is planning to compete in four Cyprus Triathlon Federation games from mid-March till the end of May and in a marathon in the autumn of 2025 in a European city.
