The Athens Concert Hall is set to mark the centenary of the legendary Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis in 2025 with a historic performance of Canto General on February 16.
This tribute, part of the “Mikis Theodorakis Year” celebrations, will feature iconic singer Maria Farantouri and acclaimed baritone Tasis Christogiannopoulos in a night of unforgettable music.
The evening will open with Canto General, Mikis Theodorakis’ powerful musical adaptation of Pablo Neruda’s poetic masterpiece. The concert will also include some of Theodorakis’ most beloved works, performed under the musical direction of Miltos Logiadis. Accompanying the soloists will be the 60-member ERT and Municipality of Athens Choirs, a 20-member ensemble, and the Philharmonic Orchestra of Athens.
Maria Farantouri, widely regarded as Theodorakis’ muse and one of Greece’s most celebrated performers, will take the stage for her final live performance of Canto General. The work, based on the Chilean Nobel laureate’s poetic cosmogony of Latin America, is a stirring call for life, peace, and freedom. Theodorakis’ orchestration transformed it into a globally renowned modern classical masterpiece, celebrated for its melodic richness and rhythmic complexity.
This unique performance will showcase the original orchestration envisioned by Theodorakis, with a 15-member ensemble and two choirs, offering a rare and authentic experience of the composer’s vision.
