During the holiday season, Borough Market buzzes with Christmas spirit but is often overcrowded. I found a street food market that’s just a 15-minute walk away, and it is an absolute hidden gem.
Maltby Street Market has flourished in Bermondsey since 2010, becoming a hotspot for passionate foodie traders. The impressive viaduct, built from an estimated 40 million bricks, houses a variety of local traders that serve unique street food.
Open only on weekends, from 10 am to 5pm on Saturdays, and 10am to 4 pm on Sundays, Maltby Street Market is the perfect escape from Borough Market’s overwhelming crowds. I had to check it out.

The narrow street exudes charm, adorned with vibrant flags strung on a rope. It’s brimming with niche street food stalls, plus indoor delis and bars where you can bring your street food in.
There’s a wine store, a Mediterranean deli, and even an oyster bar with a cute little terrace. I even stumbled upon a hidden wedding venue. These indoor spaces are ideal for the rainy season.
Each food stall specialises in one thing, from Cuban sandwiches and Greek moussaka to fluffy milk bread buns, all at reasonable prices. I tried the award-winning biryani from Degchi, and it was absolutely delicious.
I also found the most amazing all-vegan bakery: Kegarmo. I was told it was the best vegan bakery in London, all done by the same person, so it was impossible to resist.
It was also impossible to choose what to eat. They had dozens and dozens of different cakes, cookies, buns, pies, pastries, loafs… From apple and pumpkin buns, to Guinness chocolate cake, and a Biscoff and banana pie.
After asking the staff and other customers for recommendations, I went for the Blueberry Basque Cheesecake; and I honestly could not believe this was vegan. I don’t know how a cheesecake can be done without cheese, but I am a fan now.
The prices were slightly higher, with the cheesecake priced at £4.75 and other items ranging from £3 to £5.30. But knowing it’s a small business, I’m more than happy to support them.
So, if you’re looking for a delightful escape from the crowds, head over to Maltby Street Market for an amazing blend of food, culture, and cosy vibes!
