The Hellenic National Defense General Staff (GEETHA) announced on Monday the planned decommissioning of several military camps across Greece as part of Defense Minister Nikos Dendias’ initiative to reorganize the armed forces.
A total of 10 military camps in Laconia, Fthiotida, Ioannina, Thessaloniki, Kos, and Evros will be closed, with their units relocated and integrated into other camps within the same regions.
The first phase of the plan, which focuses on consolidating under-manned units to enhance the operational effectiveness of the Greek armed forces, is expected to be completed by the end of this year.
The second phase, which includes further camp closures, relocations, and unit mergers, is scheduled for completion by March 31, 2025.
After the relocations and mergers are finalized, the decommissioned camps will be transferred to the National Defense Fund (NDF) for further management.
