[Kneecap]
Belfast rappers Kneecap and Californian hip-hoppers Cypress Hill have been announced as the first two acts for next year’s Rockwave, Greece’s biggest annual music festival.
The bands will perform on July 13 at Terra Vibe in Malakasa at the festival, which turns 30 this year.
Bursting out from a squat in Belfast, Kneecap’s Moglai Bap, Mo Chara, and DJ Provai are spearheading a moment in Irish culture, music, language, and cinema that has brought them to sensational levels, with their eponymous comedy-drama film being selected to represent Ireland in next year’s Oscar’s in the international feature film category.
The band, who believe that “every word spoken in Irish is a bullet fired for Irish freedom,” sings in a mix of Irish and English.
Much longer on the scene, Cypress Hill have sold more than 20 million albums worldwide and are one of hip-hop’s biggest acts. The first Latino hip-hop group to achieve platinum and multi-platinum status, the band has cemented its place in hip-hop history with timeless hits like “Insane in the Brain,” “Hits from the Bong” and “(Rock) Superstar.”
