Following Donald Trump’s re-election, Greece is reassessing its US diplomatic strategy, aiming to rebuild communication channels with the new administration. While Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis enjoyed a closer political alignment with Kamala Harris, he recognizes the need to re-engage with Trump, having previously collaborated on strengthening defense relations during Trump’s first term.
Athens is closely observing Trump’s appointments, particularly that of Susie Wiles, a trusted insider with limited international experience but strong Capitol Hill connections. Mitsotakis, anticipating meetings with Trump and other European leaders, believes the strong foundation of US-Greece relations will ensure stability, particularly given Greece’s strategic importance in the Southeastern Mediterranean.
Beyond the White House, Greece is leveraging existing connections within the Republican-controlled Congress. Deputy Foreign Minister Alexandra Papadopoulou and Greek Ambassador to the US, Katerina Nasika, both possess extensive networks within the Republican party and are expected to play crucial roles.
Existing personal relationships are also being highlighted. Mitsotakis maintains a close relationship with former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, despite Trump’s recent announcement that Pompeo won’t be part of the new administration. Former Chief of Staff Reince Priebus, with Greek heritage, is another point of contact within Trump’s inner circle.
Potential appointees for key positions like National Security Advisor and Secretary of State are being scrutinized, including figures like Rick Grenell, Robert O’Brien, Marco Rubio, and Bill Hagerty. Greece is particularly interested in Rubio’s involvement, given his co-sponsorship of the 2021 U.S.-Greece Defense and Interparliamentary Partnership Act.
Within Congress, Greece counts on the support of Representatives Gus Bilirakis and Nicole Malliotakis, both staunch Trump supporters. New additions to the Greek lobby include Maggie Hassan and Mike Haridopolos. Mitsotakis recently hosted a delegation of Republican senators, further solidifying connections on Capitol Hill.
Finally, the appointment of a new US Ambassador to Greece is a key factor. The current ambassador, George Tsunis, a Biden appointee, is nearing the end of his term, and his successor will be crucial for the future of Greek-American relations.
