Greece is set to achieve the most powerful Armed Forces in its history by the year 2030, ensuring unparalleled security for its citizens and society, according to National Defence Minister Nikos Dendias. The announcement was made on Wednesday during an address at the Piraeus Marine Club.
Minister Dendias emphasised that the challenges facing Greece today differ significantly from those of the past century. “These threats require decisiveness, courage, clear vision, and the willingness to bear political costs,” he stated, highlighting the critical role of the Hellenic Navy and enhanced deterrence measures in the Aegean region.
He revealed a strategic shift in Greece’s defence approach, including the creation of a comprehensive anti-missile defence system. This “anti-missile dome” will protect Greek territory through a multi-layered structure supported by mobile units stationed across the country’s 2,400 islands, as well as its mainland.
Dendias also highlighted advancements in drone defence, introducing the ‘Kentavros’ (Centaur) anti-drone system. Successfully tested in the Eastern Aegean and during operational trials aboard Greek frigates in the Red Sea, the system demonstrated its effectiveness by neutralising two drones, an incident documented in a Dutch video. The minister confirmed that ‘Kentavros’ would be deployed across all four MEKO frigates in the Greek fleet.
These developments signal a robust modernisation of Greece’s defence capabilities, positioning the country as a formidable military power in the region by the end of the decade.
