Opa! Campbelltown set to sizzle with Greek spirit at OXI Day celebration

The mystery bouzouki player has been revealed!

Internationally acclaimed virtuoso Tommy Tsonis will headline the inaugural Macarthur Greeks OXI Day.

On Sunday, October 27, the Campbelltown Showground will come alive with the irresistible sounds of bouzoukis, dazzling dance performances, and mouth-watering Greek food.

Tsonis will of course treat the crowd to his signature blend of Greek classics, world music, and modern hits, on stage between 2 pm and 3pm.

Having performed at over 5,000 events in Australia and on the global stage – including the Sydney Olympic Games official ceremony to launch the torch relay in 2000, Tsonis is renowned for his unparalleled skill with the bouzouki as well as his impressive showmanship.

OXI Day is celebrated every year on October 28 and is a public holiday in Greece. It marks the day in 1940 when Greece said “no’’ (oxi in Greek) to an ultimatum from Italy.

As well as parades and other formalities, the day is celebrated with food, dancing and music.

The Macarthur Greeks have lined up a cultural treat for the day, with performances from the absolutely fabulous Sydney Sizmos dancers choreographed by Nelly and Harry Klavdiou, and the Ingleburn Pipes and Drums Band led by Peter Jakobsson, among others.

“Bring the family – the kids can bring a ball to kick around in the playing field – have some delicious Greek food and enjoy a little bit of Greek culture right in the heart of Campbelltown,’’ says popular local journo and president of the Macarthur Greeks, Eric Kontos.

Food on offer will include souvlaki wraps, while refreshing beverages will also be available. A coffee truck will also be operating during the day.

The Festival is on from 11am to 4pm. Entry is free.

“We warmly invite everyone to join us on October 27 to celebrate with us this little corner of our wonderful multicultural community,” Mr Kontos adds.
