The San Pietro a Majella Conservatory Concerts 2024: A Diverse Musical Offering

Friday, September 27th, San Pietro a Majella will reopen its doors to the city with the start of the autumn session of the series «The Conservatory Concerts 2024». The variety of performance practices and genres proposed by the event will once again reflect the breadth of San Pietro a Majella’s offerings, bringing together Renaissance music with popular music, classical authors with contemporary composers.

The first event on the calendar will feature the Philharmonic Society «Mantzaros» of Corfu with a tribute to the repertoire developed on the Ionian Islands between the 18th and 19th centuries. On this occasion, a memorandum of understanding will be signed between the prestigious institution and San Pietro a Majella to consolidate the relationships that have linked the Greek musical scene to the Neapolitan Conservatory since the mid-19th century.

Tuesday, October 8th, the theme of a concert will be the Neapolitan song, tracing its evolution over the past 100 years, from «Era de maggio» by Salvatore di Giacomo and Mario Costa to «Terra» by Carlo Faiello and Corrado Sfogli, including «Tammurriata nera» by Edoardo Nicolardi and E. A. Mario.

Also in October, noteworthy is the appointment with the Ensemble Dissonanzen, which, under the direction of Francesco Gesualdi, will perform music by six young students of the Conservatory on Wednesday, October 16th, chosen to testify to the different stylistic approaches that characterize the new Neapolitan compositional school.

The combination of music and poetry will mark the original performance of QuartEight, which on Thursday, October 17th will see four pianists propose pieces for eight hands on two pianos. Created in collaboration with the Piccola Accademia di Poesia di Milano, the concert will feature Margherita Vicario as the reciting voice. The majestic 4000-pipe organ of the Scarlatti hall will play again on Tuesday, October 29th thanks to Livia Mazzanti, performer of an unconventional tribute to Domenico and Alessandro Scarlatti. The former will be remembered with organ adaptations of eight of his harpsichord sonatas, the latter will be evoked with four improvisations on his themes.

The students of the Conservatory will once again be the protagonists of the series on Wednesday, October 30th with the start of «Palco S.P.A.M», a series of concerts that will see them perform periodically as part of the advanced training course «Officine di San Pietro a Majella». The creativity of women in music and literature will be the common thread of the show «NonsoloEva#3» scheduled for Friday, November 15th, while suspended between classicism and modernity will be the concert on Friday, the 22nd, which will make Johann Sebastian Bach dialogue with George Brassens and Lucio Battisti.

The autumn session of the series will conclude on Friday, November 29th with «Consort Rinascimentale», a chamber music concert of the 16th and 17th centuries born from the collaboration between the Departments of Ancient Music of the conservatories of Naples, Rome, and Benevento. Twenty musicians will take the stage of the Scarlatti hall performing works by Alessandro Orologio, Tomas Luis de Victoria, Michael Praetorius, Gabriel Bataille, Samuel Scheidt, Lorenzo Allegri. The originality of the ensemble, the absolutely particular sounds, the very rare music make the appointment of particular interest.

All concerts of the series will start at 6:00 pm with free admission until seats are exhausted. For information www.sanpietroamajella.it.
