SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) – A popular food and heritage festival is continuing Friday in Savannah. The 74th annual Greek Festival kicked off Thursday and will run through Saturday.
The event welcomes people from all over the Hostess City and surrounding areas to enjoy Greek cuisine and culture.
“Every year, the Savannah community is waiting for this event,” said Tommy Danos, Savannah Greek Festival Chair.
Most of the Greek Festival takes place at the Hellenic Community Center, but a huge part happens inside St. Paul’s Greek Orthodox Church.
Throughout the festival, the church hosts tours and lectures, giving people a chance to learn more about Orthodox Christianity–the most predominant religion practiced by Greeks.
The Hellenic Community Center is where the rest of the fun and food is located.
No matter what you like, organizers say there’s something delicious for everyone to enjoy, whether it’s a Greek Salad or Gyro, a Greek pastry like Baklava or even something to sip on such as Greek coffee or wine.
“We have regulars that will come here for every meal for the next three days because they are anticipating this event,” said Danos.
Danos says Greeks are all about sharing their culture, heritage and faith. It’s the whole point of the festival.
“People realize that they know when they come here, they’re going to get a great meal, great entertainment, a nice taste of culture, interaction of the faith in the church on church tours,” said Danos. “And that’s what we want to do.”
Also, inside the Hellenic Center, there’s Greek music and dancing to enjoy, a Greek grocery store to shop at and vendors as you walk in to check out.
The Savannah Greek Festival runs from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. both Friday and Saturday.
