Summer is right around the corner, and what better way to escape the scorching heat than an island vacation in blissful Greece? It’s hard not to be charmed by the diversity and beauty of the country, which offers a dreamy escape for every kind of traveller—whether you’re looking for pristine beaches, rich history, adrenaline-fuelled adventures, or vibrant nightlife—there’s an island waiting for you. While destinations like Mykonos and Santorini draw most of the crowds, they also tend to be overrun with tourists during the summer season. So, how do you decide where to go? We break it down with our guide of underrated Greek islands that are worth your while, along with what to eat, see and do:
Milos: Sandy Toes And Sun-Kissed Romance

Part of the Cyclades group of islands, Milos feels secluded and laid-back, yet offers plenty to explore. When in Milos, stay near the port in Adamantas and rent a car, so you can visit the quaint fishing villages of Klima and Mandrakia. Milos has no shortage of beautiful beaches but if we had to choose, we’d suggest Sarakiniko Beach (for its moonscape appearance) and Tsigrado. Dine at restaurants such as Enalion, Okto and Avli-Milos for fresh seafood and authentic Greek fare. You can also take a boat out to Kimolos Island for a day of sunshine and serene views.
Where to stay: Milos Breeze or Domes White Coast Milos
Ios: Where The Party Doesn’t End Till Sunrise

If you’re looking for an alternative to Mykonos’ overpriced nightlife, Ios is where you want to be. Conveniently located between Santorini and Naxos, people come to Ios for its buzzing beach clubs, lively bars and all-night parties. You’ll want to stay near the capital town of Chora, where picturesque, whitewashed streets are lined with rooftop bars, quaint restaurants and pulsating nightclubs.
Visit the island’s famous beach bars like FarOut and EREGO. To recover from your night out, recharge at Mylopotas Beach or take a boat to Manganari Beach for something more relaxed. Locals and tourists like to hang out at spots like Drakos Taverna for its seafood delicacies, Almyra By The Sea for stunning seaside views and Grandma’s Restaurant for local flavours with a contemporary twist, in an upscale setting.
Where to stay: Liostasi Hotel and Calilo
Paros: The Island That Has It All

Paros is the ultimate crowd pleaser that has something for everyone. A stunning blend of beaches, culture, adventure and nightlife; you can’t go wrong with this island. Naousa is the island’s stylish hub, filled with waterfront tavernas, boutique shops and cocktail bars, while Parikia, the capital, blends traditional charm with modern energy. Beach lovers should head to Kolymbithres for its unique rock formations or Golden Beach for windsurfing. The best part of Paros, however, might be its sister island, Antiparos—also known to be a celebrity favourite (Actor Tom Hanks owns a summer home here), and is a short boat or helicopter ride away.
Where to stay: A villa in Parikia, Naoussa, or a stay near the town in Antiparos
Naxos: For A Taste Of Local Culture And Heritage

If you’re looking to immerse yourself in authentic Greek culture, then Naxos is the island for you. Naxos has played an important role in Greek mythology, being the home of Dionysus, the Greek God of wine and pleasure, as well as the site of his love affair with Cretan princess Ariadne, after she fled with Theseus. The largest of the Cyclades, Naxos has the perfect mix of stunning landscapes, ancient history and a vibrant local food scene.
Explore the Portara or Temple of Apollo, an iconic marble gateway, Kastro (the old Venetian castle) and the Temple of Demeter, or get lost in the narrow alleys of Naxos Town. Venture inland to see traditional mountain villages like Apeiranthos, where you can try the island’s famous cheese, Graviera Naxou, potatoes and Kitron liqueur. Lastly, savour meals at restaurants like Rotunda, Elenniko and Metaxi Mas for authentic Greek meals in laid-back, family-style settings. Naxos offers experiences that go beyond the typical tourist trail.
Where to stay: Elaiolithos, Kavos and Nissaki
Crete: Fun For All Ages

Crete is Greece’s largest island with an international airport, making it easily accessible, especially if you’re travelling with the brood in tow. It’s also home to multiple all-inclusive resorts, where you can laze at the property and step out for meals and beach days at your convenience. Don’t forget to take a trip to Elafonisi Beach, famous for its pink sand and shallow waters, and perfect for kids to splash around in. For history buffs, the Palace of Knossos offers a fascinating look into the Minoan civilisation (Bronze Age), while hiking through the Samaria Gorge is a great activity for adventure lovers. Take the family to visit an olive oil farm to learn more about how this liquid gold is produced, and purchase some artisanal olive oil on your way back.
Where to stay: All-inclusive resorts like Creta Mariss, Mitsis Selection Laguna, and Stella Island Resort & Spa
