31st annual Spartanburg Greek Festival returns with food, fun

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (WSPA) – St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church kicked off the 31st Annual Spartanburg Greek Festival Friday.

The festival offers live music and dancing demonstrations, but there is one particular thing about which people are most excited.

“The food of course,” said Siri Ghazal, a vendor. “It’s the best you can have!”

“I mean of course we enjoyed the music, and we enjoyed the dancing and all of the energy that’s here, but mostly we just love to come and eat the food,” said another vendor, Sandy Burn.

“To be honest, the food is absolutely delicious and, this year, I think they outdid themselves,” said Mary Giles, who attended the festival on Friday.

There is a wide variety of options ranging from homemade pastries and warm meals made fresh on the grill to Greek ice cream and coffee.

When we asked festivalgoers what their favorite dish was, the answers were as varied as the choices.

“I always get a box of the assorted pastries, but I love the Greek chicken,” said Burn.

But visitors noted that the food wasn’t the only thing that made them feel good. They said it was nice to see the community come together in support of the Greek church.

“Everything is so good,” Giles explained. “I’ve been sitting here watching the people and it’s so nice to see people interacting with one another, just smiling and enjoying their time.”

There are also five vendors at the festival, each displaying a different Greek-inspired product, along with a bookstore and tours of the church.

If you aren’t able to make it, you can bring the festival to your home by ordering online through Hub City Delivery.

The festival runs from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m Friday and Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m Sunday at the church on Asheville Highway.

Festival directors encouraged people to take the shuttle from Gibbs Stadium at Wofford College, as on-site parking is very limited.
