It’s no secret that it’s a pricey pain to host the Olympic Games, running billions of dollars above the estimated budget. As the International Olympic Committee receives fewer bids with each problematic games, the future of the tradition is looking unsure. We spoke with Smith College Professor of Economics Andrew Zimbalist on the matter. He should know, he’s written about the Olympic issues in Circus Maximus, No Boston Olympics, and Rio 2016.

Screw the Olympics – who watches that boring overblown rubbish anyways?
Until Barcelona '92, every city that hosted the Olympics was always going to lose money, Barcelona '92 changed that standard and made Barcelona great. Athens is an example of a poor management in money and Rio is and example of how it can affect people if you don't think in residents.
Host cities used to make money, now it's the Olympic committee lining their own pockets, but asking host cities to spend more
BOYCOTT PARIS 2024
How can a city that discriminates against disabled people organise the Paralympic Games ???
Was it ever worth it?
The expenditure is never worth it for the athletes or the hosting country.
Any improvements a company makes to its infrastructure could have been made without having hosted the Olympics.
Choose 3 cities and rotate amongst them twice and that’s included in one bit so at least you get it twice and get to reuse the venues
I think the way they're currently going, by choosing cities that already have all or most (85% or more) of the infrastructure needed already built like Paris and Los Angeles instead of cities that had hardly any and needed to build (Sochi, Rio and Pyeongchang) is the best option. We seen it successfully done in London in 2012, and there's still many cities that check all the boxes and haven't hosted yet such as New York, Toronto and Madrid. Not to mention all the cities that have hosted in the past and can reuse the same venues.
The ancient Olympics were exclusively held in Olympia, Greece, which is where the name comes from. They were chiefly a religious ceremony to honor Zeus.
What about Milano Cortina
I learned this in my Sociocultural Impact of the Olympic Games class. Really interesting material!
If the Olympics want to continue hosting the events…it may be time to have future events hosted by past cities since the cost of building new venues are becoming too expensive to maintain 💯
I live in Vancouver. There are very few Olympic legacy monuments left from 2010. Most of the infrastructure is still in use. But the biggest positive that came out of the game is the short and long term employment the games bought. Many people still use their employment experience on their resume
Cause communism invaded the west
Greece should be the one & only host! If it ain't broken, y fix cause corruption has it's hand all in! Are not the olympians suppose to be the greatest warriors from each nation? Maybe not like when the olympics 1st began, but let the olympians rebuild greece to it's prestiges name at the height of its glory! All proceeds could go into the city! The olympians don't need any special treatment, let them stay in them shacks & crumbling bldgs as they start the rebuild process with whatever help provided all along while participating in the games at the sametime! Showing the unity of diverse people coming together to work on a piece of art during our time to reestablish, replenish & give birth to world that learned to shine & to flourish for the gods to look upon from the skies & make the gods want to join us down here on the ground!
Shouldn't they be played in Greece like how it was in the olden days?
No one but the politicians care about hosting the games. And ever since the games went pro, I stopped watching or caring.

2018 olympics "including 2 previous hosts, salt lake city and sapporo"
Calgary: Am I a joke to you?
id be interested to know the economics of the olympics.. do the TV stations basically pay for the entire thing basically? and like nike and gatorade? lol
Hearing the idea of LA hosting the Summer Olympics is now sorta absurd, considering the timeline, NASCAR would become fuming about losing at least 8 whole possible races, since the Busch Clash is is now being tested in the Coliseum, so while I like the idea, perhaps an exposition race would be a better idea, instead of the Coliseum, set up a temporary venue for NASCAR on the streets, or hold an Airport race, didn’t we do that back in the 70’s? If so, why can’t we do it again, similar to the NASCAR races at the Calder Park Thunderdome, it’s not a point-collecting race, and perhaps get the Indy and F1 guys involved, and other stock car racers, and you’d have a racing spectacle. I mean, yeah, it’s a risk, but when you have it leading up to the opening ceremonies, why not, the idea would make a millionaire tremble with joy like a kid in a damn Candy Store.
annnnd unfortunately, against all Logic and reason… We here in Brisbane, Australia have it in 2032…
The asteroid can NOT, come soon enough :/
STEALING AND DEALING CRIME CLUB ! CLEAN AND CLEAR
Probably because people are finally wising up & realizing that the Olympics are just a platform for self-centered, annoying over achieving show-offs, masquerading as patriots?!
Greece should be the permanent host. The Olympics is originally a Greek tradition and that should be honoured.
A very interesting take on why countries are not very keen on hosting the Olympics. But I believe, with the huge costs and everything, it brings immense popularity for the host country and other countries just start taking them more seriously. Olympics are an amazing opportunity for athletes around the world and NYXS is actively working on preparing individuals to give their best
