TRINIDAD and Tobago captured one silver and two bronze medals at the 26th annual International Acropolis Cup Boxing Tournament which concluded at the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens, Greece on Saturday.

TT’s Ornella Ramnath punched to silver in the women’s 52 kg category while compatriots Tianna Guy (57kg) and lone male pugilist Nigel Paul (92+kg) churned out bronze medal performances.

Paul, however, was the only one to notch a win en route to the podium. In his opening bout against North Macedonia’s 19-year-old Ardijan Azemim, Paul staved off a plethora of blows in the first three minutes of the opening round.

However, in the second round, the burly TT boxer landed some clean shots on the youngster which resulted in Azemim’s ringside team opting to abandon their quarter-final bout.

Paul went on to face Ukrainian Oleksander Hrytsiv in the semi-final but was beaten 2-1 on points by the European fighter, who went on to win gold. Greek judge Kaouris Georgios was the only official to rule in Paul’s favour. In her lone bout, Walker was beaten 3-0 on points by Chrysoula Plea of the host nation. Both boxers were the lone competitors in the women’s 52kg which meant that Plea captured top honours while Walker easily earned silver.

A similar fate awaited Guy in the women’s 57kg, as she lost her opening match 3-0 to Greece’s Antonia Giannakopoulou. With only three competitors in this division, Guy finished third overall with the Greek boxer winning gold while German Fiona Wohlers snagged silver.

This tourney served as preparation for Paul and Guy who will represent TT at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, UK from July 28 to August 8.

The boxing trio was joined by national boxing coach Reynold Cox in Greece.
