Travel even if you have trouble getting around – Orange County Register

I’m going to Greece. This may not sound noticeable, except that Greece is a very rugged country. In fact, the slogan of the country is “We have many stairs.”

I have stage 4 cancer and can hardly walk.

When I announced to my friends that I was going to Greece, they all looked at me as if they had finished melting my brain with chemotherapy. “You know that Greece is a very hilly country …” they all declared as if they had never thought of it before.

But there is a problem here. I don’t have to climb them. exactly. I’m not feeling well right now, so I’ll go anywhere anyway. Life is too short to sit in a reclining chair and mourn the pain.

Over the last two years, during my adventures, I’ve learned that pain is reduced, not pain. Because you are too busy to sit down and think about them. And if you are willing to invest a little in research, you can act without problems. really. You can do it.

This is my secret. I book a wheelchair when I buy a plane ticket. It is provided free of charge at all airports. Alternatively, you can bring your own. That way, you don’t have to dig down the insanely long airport corridor. In some cases, the airline may provide a special seat in advance.

Find a hotel room on the ground floor or a hotel with an elevator online. Usually you use Booking.com. This is because there is a feature that allows you to select only hotels that offer accessible rooms. I always email the hotel myself before arriving as a backup. Marriott and Hyatt hotels offer barrier-free rooms, usually with an elevator to put a cast in the pool.

I often book private tours so I can go at my own pace and not have to keep up with the group. For example, when I went to Meteora, one of Greece’s main attractions, I booked a private tour to one monastery, which had already been promised to have few stairs. I warn the tour company in advance that I am mean. Then the tour company will be able to understand how to accept me.
