The next Olympian? Stamford 6th graders test their Greek athletic chops with discus and shot put

STAMFORD — Eight ancient Greek city-states did battle Tuesday afternoon in challenges meant to test the participants’ strength, athleticism and intelligence.

And it all took place on the lawn in front of Strawberry Hill School.

Sixth grade students at the school took part in the first ever “Pioneer Games,” named after the school’s mascot and loosely based on the first ever Olympics in Greece.

Events included a discus throw — with a Frisbee — and a shot put competition using a softball.

The event was designed as part of an eight-week study of ancient Greece for the school’s sixth grade students.
