Middle school teacher plays Assassin’s Creed in class to teach history lesson

ARAB, Ala. (Gray News) – Can video games be educational?

A middle school teacher in Alabama seems to think so.

Mr. Mahathey teaches grades seven and eight in Arab. He recently went viral on TikTok for teaching a history lesson using the Assassin’s Creed Odyssey video game.

The Assassin’s Creed series is built around some of the world’s biggest historical events, and Mahathey is seen in the video using this installment to teach his students about the Battle of Thermopylae.

Thermopylae is a mountain pass near the sea in northern Greece, according to the World History Encyclopedia. The site hosted numerous battles through human history, the most famous of these was the Battle of Thermopylae, a fight within the context of the Persian War in which the Greeks fought the Persians in August 480 BCE.

The World History Encyclopedia said the Greeks were able to defend the pass from the Persians despite their army being much smaller. The Greek army was led by King Leonidas and was made up by a small force of Spartans and Greek hoplites, or citizen-soldiers typically armed with spears and shields.
